Employing a variety of ruthless tactics, including tunnelling beneath walls, utilizing battering rams, and even infiltrating via a visiting circus, Cluny repeatedly fails to breach the abbey defenses. His desperation grows as he kidnaps Cornflower for ransom and burns the gates, eventually driving him toward insanity while haunted by nightmares involving Martin's image. The climax arrives when Cluny forces a captured dormouse to open the gates from within, allowing his army to overrun the sanctuary just as Matthias returns with reinforcements of shrews and sparrows. Dressed in Martin's ancient armor, Matthias terrifies Cluny during the ensuing battle. The final confrontation occurs atop the belltower where Cluny holds Cornflower hostage; Matthias tricks him into releasing her before cutting the bell ropes, causing the massive bell to crash down and instantly kill the rat warlord.
