Contrary to some accounts, Martin the Warrior did not establish Salamandastron. He first came to Mossflower, helped found Redwall Abbey, and only later traveled to the already-existing mountain fortress, where he became its champion. It became a stronghold where those drawn to combat evil directly could train under experienced warriors, serving as a vital defensive bulwark rather than an alternative youth academy separate from monastic life. The fortress is renowned for its impenetrable defenses and the sacred trust placed in its defenders to protect the weak from marauding vermin. Throughout history, Salamandastron has weathered numerous sieges by notorious villains, though records do not attribute any campaign against it to Slagar the Cruel. Despite repeated attempts by various foes to conquer it, the spirit of Martin keeps the walls strong. The fortress maintains a close alliance with Redwall Abbey, often lending aid when the Abbey is threatened or when a hero needs to prove their worth before taking up the mantle of leadership elsewhere.
